History itSMF is a membership user forum, established in 1991 in the UK as a non-profit organization (NPO). The purpose of the forum is to promote spread of the operation management standards for information systems [ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library)], which was created in the late 1980s by the OGC* (Office of Government Commerce), a part of the UK government.
Currently, itSMF conducts its activities worldwide, mainly in Europe and the U.S. itSMF Japan was established in May 2003 to begin its activities as the first itSMF chapter in Asia.

 Going global In November 2003, the board of itSMF international approved establishment of new chapters in Portugal and Romania, totalling 37 chapters in operation in various countries and regions. In addition, more chapters are in preparation for establishment in many countries. The following is a part of the list of chapters:
